The Soviet Navy is most commonly referred to as the Red Fleet. This is because the Soviet Navy once was given the name, “Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Fleet.” This was the name given to one of the Soviet Union’s premiere attempts at establishing a naval force to engage in organized military combat. After a civil war and a rather large attack, the Navy was barely able to survive the fight of another war, but they managed. They were able to ready themselves by 1941 for World War II. The Soviet Navy had come to have a rather significant presence by the time the naval force had reached World War II. This was the point at which the Soviet Union was able to own the necessary artillery needed to be a strong competitor in the face of a major war. Some of the artillery that the naval force had was seven cruisers, 3 battleships, 269 torpedo boats, 218 submarines, and 22 patrol vessels. Although some of their artillery was destroyed, there was also a number of property that they were able to acquire at the guise of some of the opposing defeated naval forces, some of which came from the United States Navy and the Italian Navy. The Soviet Navy had ended its fight in World War II in 1945.

The Soviet Navy was most noted for their war tactics in the Cold War. The Cold War was a war that lasted from 1947 to 1991. The Cold War is also noted as the point for which the “Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Fleet” name was officially changed to the Soviet Navy. During the span of the Cold War, the issues that were held as the basis as the long-lasting conflict were the rush to be the first to create the best nuclear military weapons, other technical based competitions, and being the first to make the best rapid advancements in terms of outer space. The other components of the Cold War were largely related to military combat and attack. This was also a time where the Soviet Navy made it a point to be able to stand up to the military forces of other nations. One of the ways that the Soviet Navy worked to achieve this goal is by improving the production and technology of their artillery. They were quite successful at the goal that they had set out to receive. The Soviet Navy had proven themselves to be a competitive force to be reckon with by naval force of the Western world.

As the presence and political force of the Soviet Union slowly deteriorated, so did their naval force. One of the main reasons that the Soviet Navy had failed to continue to fight another war was the fact that without proper government organization and financial backing, it made it impossible for the Soviet Navy to survive. The Soviet Navy was then followed by the Russian Navy. The birth of the Russian Navy in 1991 is what many people tend to refer to as the re-birth. The Russian Navy was originally established in 1696 under the political administration of Peter the Great. The Russian Navy also has obvious deep roots in the Soviet naval force, as it is still in possession of a large number of its artillery. The Russian Federation Ship is the international designation of the Russian Navy. The current naval forces are the Baltic Fleet, the Black Sea Fleet, the Russian Pacific Fleet, the Northern Fleet, the Caspian Flotilla, and the Russian Coastal Troops.

There are a couple of incidents that have occurred with the recent history of the Russian Navy that posed potential setbacks for the naval force. The first occurred in the year 2000. In 2000, the Russian nuclear submarine, K-141 Kursk, unexpectedly sank within the waters of the Barents Sea. It is said that there was an accidental explosion that occurred in the torpedo room of the submarine, that ultimately led to its sinking. The submarine had originally taken its first launch in 1994. The K-141 Kursk was formerly a part of the Northern Fleet. The K-141 Kursk is most noted for being used in 1999 during the Kosovo War.

The other incident that happened to the Russian Navy just eight years later was the 2008 Russian submarine K-152 Nerpa accident. The accident occurred as a result of a submarine test by the Russian Navy. During the test, a burst of fire suppressant gas had been released. This happened under water when the testing triggered the fire extinguisher system to activate, exposing the gas to the victims. This led to the death of 20 people, three of which were military personnel. There were a total of an additional 41 people that were injured as a result of the accident. The K-152 Nerpa remained in tact.

Just like any other naval force, the Russian Navy is not exempt from setbacks from time to time, the Russian Navy continues to swim full speed ahead. One of its current endeavors is to once again stay ahead of the curve and participate in the leap to create the most powerful, technologically advanced, naval artillery known to man. The Russian Navy is working to use their nuclear power to initiate significant force across a broader range, with less naval equipment. At this point, the Navy is still in the design and development phases. The initial phase of construction is projected to take place along the timeline of 2013, 2014. Upon construction, there is a slated initial service entry of a period of another 3 years following.
